Under the Northern Sky: 2019, Cooke’s Studios, Barrow-In-Furness

The work is inspired by the notion of seeing and the way our brains process the inverted images they receive to present us with what we perceive to be our ongoing stream of reality.

Web cameras and projection were used to form a live stream of an inverted and non-inverted image which was projected back into the space. A slight delay was added to the stream creating an uncanny sensation whilst watching your own projected image move, as well as highlighting the delay the brain imposes on visual information it receives.

"What you are seeing at the present moment is not a fresh snapshot of the world but rather an average of what you've seen in the past 10 to 15 seconds," Jason Fischer, Ph.D. Neuroscientist at MIT.

This opens a wider conversation about the notion of reality itself and questioning well worn phrases like ‘seeing is believing’.

Developed as part of Signal Film & Media's Artist Development Lab
